It's referencing Joel Gion, tambourine man of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and popular character in the documentary Dig!. Someone in Burlington has created a Church of Gion, worshiping all that is Joel. A former Wes student gave Lynn a copy of Dig!, and we watch it all the time now, when a Netflix movie selection has not come.
I'm one of the co-founders of the Church of Gion. We started it last summer after repeated viewings over many months of "DiG!". Commentator is correct in that it's about worshiping all things Joel. It's also about living a life of grooviness and one that is fulfilling and creates good in yourself and others.
I'm here to destroy this effed up system. I will do it. That's why I got the job. I said let it be me. I said use my hands, I will use our strength. Let's effing burn it to the ground.
